The elevation above was drawn by hand, in the office, early in a project. It is on this page deliberately, because the question worth asking about new technology in architecture is not whether it is impressive. It is which part of the work it actually improves, and which part it only appears to. Every few years the profession is told it is about to be replaced. Computer-aided drafting was going to do it, then building information modelling, then parametric design. What happened instead was narrower and more useful: each tool absorbed a category of labour, changed how drawings were produced, and left the judgement where it was. Artificial intelligence looks likely to follow the same pattern, on a shorter timescale and across a wider range of tasks.
What AI is genuinely good at right now
Options, early. A model can produce twenty massing studies or twenty plan arrangements in the time it takes to draw one. On a constrained lot that is a real advantage, because it is cheap to look at possibilities you would not otherwise have drawn. The value is in widening the search, not in the output itself: nineteen of the twenty will be wrong, and knowing which one is not is the entire skill.
Checking, late. This is the part nobody photographs and the part that saves money. Comparing a drawing set against itself for the door that appears on the plan and not the schedule. Reading a lease, a set of landlord criteria or a zoning ordinance and pulling out the clauses that govern a schedule. Summarising two hundred pages of submittals. Sorting the correspondence that accumulates during construction administration. These are language tasks, and language models do them well.
Writing and translating. Specification language, meeting minutes, a plain-English summary of a technical decision for a building committee that does not read drawings for a living. Useful, low risk, and it gives time back to the design.
What it is not good at, and will not soon be
It does not know your site. It has not stood on it in July, watched where the water goes in a storm, or noticed that the neighbour’s two-storey wall kills the afternoon light on the only elevation worth opening up. For an architect working in Naples or Bonita Springs, that local knowledge is the job: flood elevations, wind-borne debris requirements, and a sun angle that turns a west wall into a load. It does not know that the client works from home three days a week, that one grandparent uses a walker, or that the congregation cares more about the room filling than about the facade.
It does not carry liability. A sealed drawing is a professional taking responsibility for a building that people will occupy in a hurricane zone. That signature cannot be delegated to a model, and no amount of capability changes the legal and ethical structure underneath it.
And it is confidently wrong in a way drafting software never was. A dimension string that does not close is obvious. A plausible-sounding code citation that does not exist is not. Every output has to be verified by someone who already knows the answer, which means these tools raise the value of experience rather than lowering it.
The technologies changing construction faster than AI is
Reality capture. Laser scanning and photogrammetry have quietly transformed renovation work. On a condominium remodel or an addition, as-built drawings are frequently wrong, and a scan replaces a week of measuring and most of the change orders that follow bad information. For the kind of interior and addition work common in Southwest Florida, this is the single most practical advance of the last decade. It matters directly to the condominium renovations the practice does in the Gulf-front towers, where structural walls, plumbing stacks and post-tensioned slabs cannot move and the drawings have to be right the first time.
Off-site fabrication. Panelised walls, factory-built bathroom pods, prefabricated mechanical assemblies. The argument is not aesthetic, it is logistical: skilled labour is scarce, and a Florida summer is a poor place to do precise work outdoors. Moving assembly into a controlled environment improves tolerance and shortens the exposure of an open building to weather.
Drones and computer vision on site. Weekly aerial documentation and automated progress comparison against the model. On a large project this shortens the distance between a problem and the conversation about it.
Robotic fabrication and printed concrete. Real, increasingly demonstrated, and still expensive at the scale most practices work. Worth watching rather than specifying.
Better performance modelling. Energy and daylight analysis that used to be a specialist consultant’s exercise now runs alongside design. This matters here more than most places. Passive principles, solar orientation and cross ventilation are decisions made in the first week, and being able to test them immediately is the difference between intent and evidence. Digital twins. Compelling for large institutional portfolios where someone is paid to operate the model after handover. For a single house it is usually more instrumentation than anyone will maintain.
How a small practice should judge any of it
There is a simple test, and it survives the marketing: does the tool make the drawings more accurate, the schedule more predictable, or the building better? One of those three, demonstrably, on this project. Anything that cannot answer is a distraction, and distraction is expensive in a practice where the same person designs, documents and visits the site. The second test is about where the time goes. Any hour a tool gives back should move to the parts of the work that only a person can do: standing on the site, working directly with the contractor, sitting with a client until the brief is actually understood. Technology that returns time and then consumes it in managing the technology has produced nothing.
Where this leaves the drawing
Luca Architects believes every project carries its own set of needs and challenges. That is not a position against new tools, it is the reason to be selective about them. A design that could not belong to anyone else comes from a specific site, a specific client and a specific set of constraints, and the tools that help are the ones that put more attention on those specifics rather than less. It is slow enough to think in, and it is the fastest way to show a client an idea before anyone has committed to it.
